Spring Houseplant Care

Words by Helen
Brighter days are well on their way! And if you’re a plant owner you may be wondering how to look after your houseplants in the spring.
For most plants, their growth period is during the spring/summer season thanks to the longer hours of sunlight and temperatures being on the rise. When the new season arrives, your plants will usually need a switch up in their care routine.

Spring Cleaning
With less care needed throughout the winter months, it’s likely your plants may have gathered some dust.
One of the first things you should do is give your plants a clean so their leaves can breathe and take in nutrients effectively. This can be done by wiping down the leaves with a damp cloth or for your more robust species, give them a shower to both clean and water them in one go.
If your plants have gotten a little sad through the colder weather it is also useful to give them a prune where needed, any damaged or limp leaves can be removed, allowing the plant to give more energy to its healthy leaves. You can do this with a clean & sharp pair of scissors.

Pot it like it's hot
Now that growing season is in full swing it’s a good idea to check whether your plants need repotting, the ideal time to repot houseplants is during spring/summer.
There are a few ways to find out if your plants are ready for a new pot. One of the most common signs is when the plant’s roots are growing through the drainage holes at the bottom of your pot, a sure sign it’s ready for a new home. Some other signs include the plant being too heavy and overgrown for it’s pot, causing it to fall over, as well as the plant noticeably slowing in growth.

Wet your plants
As your houseplants get more sunlight and warmth they will require more water compared to the winter. How often this may be totally depends on the type of houseplants you are looking after, so be sure to find watering advice specific to each species.
While a rough watering schedule is handy, it’s also useful to frequently monitor your plants and learn the signs they give you when they are dehydrated. Watering your plants based on when they need it most will improve their health more effectively than keeping to a strict schedule.

Feeding time
As well as watering houseplants more often, spring is also the perfect time to start adding some fertilizer into your care routine. This can be done every few weeks, making sure to start small at the beginning to avoid shocking your plants and always follow product instructions regarding quantities.

Give em' a shuffle
Depending on the light levels in your home, you may need to shuffle your green friends around to ensure they’re getting the amount of light they need while the seasons change. As the days get brighter (hopefully!) you should be mindful of how much sunlight is reaching your plants, you want to ensure that they are getting enough light, but equally not so much direct light that the foliage could burn. Again, it’s important you know what each of your plants require as it can vary between species.
